Mangaluru: Disha, a commerce student of Alva's PU College in Moodabidiri, secured a perfect 600 out of 600 with first rank in the II PU examinations, amidst the testing times due to a personal tragedy.
On the day of her economics exam, her mother Savitha suffered fatal injuries following an accidental fall. She later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. Despite the devastating loss, Disha returned to complete her remaining examinations in Hindi and accountancy while also taking part in funeral rituals.
Sources close to the family said some relatives even advised Disha not to appear for the exams while her mother was in hospital. Disha told TOI: "Completing the rest of my papers after losing my mother was incredibly difficult. The support from my sister, teachers and college kept me going."
Her younger sister, Deeksha, a Class 10 student, said Disha was deeply shaken by their mother's death but remained determined not to miss any examination. M Mohan Alva, chairman of the Alva's College, and Veena Agnes D'Souza, Disha's class adviser, said the lecturers too stood by her throughout the ordeal.

Though I knew I would top, I had not expected that I would secure the first rank. How efficiently we study is what matters. Apart from studies, I pursue classical music and dance
Science:
Princilla Cardoza, The Learning Centre PU College, Mangaluru – 599
I was focused on JEE preparation and only revised the PU syllabus a month before the exams, so securing the state top rank came as a surprise. I am happy with the result, but my goal remains to become an engineer and get into a good college
Ankit Bhimappa Karatagi, Morarji Desai PU College, Hukkeri – 598
I studied five to six hours daily, and at least eight hours for three months before the exam. Revising what I studied each day and reflecting on it helped me retain concepts better. The guidance from my teachers and encouragement from principal Rakesh sir were crucial
